Brickyard supports Zero Emission Zones in Dutch cities
Starting January 1, 2025, various Dutch cities will implement Zero Emission Zones (ZE-zones) to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality. These zones focus on delivery vans and trucks, which will need to be fully emission-free to access these areas. Brickyard is working closely with municipalities to prepare and enforce this new measure.
What are ZE-zones and how do they differ from environmental zones?
ZE-zones are designated urban areas where only emission-free vehicles, such as electric or hydrogen-powered vans and trucks, are allowed. Unlike environmental zones, which restrict or prohibit certain polluting vehicles, ZE-zones require full emission-free compliance for vehicles in categories N1, N2, and N3 (RDW).
Objectives of ZE-zones
ZE-zones aim to:
- Improve air quality and protect the health of city residents;
- Support climate goals by reducing CO₂ and other harmful emissions.
Introduction of ZE-zones in 2025
Cities including Groningen, Maastricht, Nijmegen, and Leiden will introduce ZE-zones from 2025, with 33 other municipalities planning or researching implementation. Access to these zones is exclusively permitted for fully emission-free vehicles. Penalties will apply to violators.
Transition Arrangements and Support for Businesses
A transition period extends until 2030 for certain vehicles, such as diesel vehicles with a Euro 6 classification registered before a specific date. Exemptions are available for vehicles serving particular functions, and the government offers subsidies to help entrepreneurs transition to an emission-free fleet. For more information, visit the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
Enforcement of ZE-zones by Brickyard
While this positive shift also brings challenges, such as effective enforcement, Brickyard is currently collaborating with several municipalities, including the aforementioned, to develop an effective camera enforcement system. In partnership with independent advisory agencies, SHPV, and RDW, Brickyard supports the transition to Zero Emission Urban Logistics.
Brickyard has long been a specialist in digital enforcement, from restricted access zones to pedestrian areas and environmental zones, and scan vehicles. By working closely with enforcement organizations, we help improve livability in numerous cities across the Netherlands.
